This is one of the rockets that I remember seeing during my childhood, and have always wanted one. As I re-entered the hobby, this has been one of the rockets I wanted to clone, but never got around to doing. The original version, number #K42/1242, was produced from 1969 to 1985. It was re-released in 2002, and I somehow missed out on it, go fig! I got lucky enough to acquire two from a private sale on the Rocketshoppe forums, but sadly they went AWOL as it went through customs. The seller was nice enough to offer to replace them, but I decided to meet him half way and have one replaced as it wasn’t his fault. He was nice enough to give me a bit of a deal on the Semroc version, which from what I have read is better anyways!
The Semroc O.T. (S.O.T for short), which is a true clone and just became available, has laser cut fins, whereas the Estes O.T. (E.O.T. for short) is the old school way of cutting out patterns and then tracing/cutting balsa. Other small differences are that the S.O.T. has balsa nose cones, similiar to the original E.O.T. #K42, and the re-release E.O.T. has plastic nose cones. The S.O.T. uses the newer Kevlar shock cord engine block mounting system, and obviously the E.O.T. uses the Estes three fold and glue to the side wall system.
In any event, I look forward to having both of these in my fleet! Please check out the Shuttle Intrepid, which is another glider system based on the above.
